Bruce Sutter was a pioneering closer known for popularizing the split-fingered fastball, and he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. Sutter played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1981 to 1984, helping them win the World Series in 1982. He recorded a then-record 45 saves in 1984 before moving to the Atlanta Braves, where he later retired due to shoulder issues. Throughout his career, Sutter amassed 300 saves, led the National League in saves five times, and was a six-time All-Star. He also won the 1979 N.L. Cy Young Award and received the Rolaids Relief Man Award four times.
